Preliminary Exercise Evaluation

For my preliminary exercise, I worked with my fellow classmate: Mohamed. We were asked to create a thirty second clip showing our understanding of three filming techniques: Match-on-action shot; Shot-reverse-shot and the 180 degree rule. The clip focuses on two individuals (Viraj and Mohamed) exchanging two-three lines of dialogue sitting at a table opposite each other. The clip ends with Viraj slamming his hands on the table as he stands up to deliver his suspenseful, final line. This is returned with an evenly dramatic line, then a fade out. This creates suspense and also, this helps to end a cliff-hanger.

WWW:
Even though the editing took place with my partner, this was my first time editing a media production. I personally think that I got to grips with the software very quickly (with some help from Mr. Halsey, of course) and that my level of understanding of editing is shown throughout the clip. Firstly, the match-on-action sequence was executed well. This was when Mohamed opens the door and walks across to his seat to sit down. We filmed the shot-reverse-shot over Viraj's left shoulder and Mohamed's right shoulder. I think this was very well framed. We also didn't break the 180 degree rule in this part of the clip. The dialogue was suspenseful, but also intrigued the audience. The pace of the clip was kept to a medium/fast pace. This added to the drama and kept the audience watching. We used a wide range of shots: A pan shot in the corridor; a close-up on the door handle for the match-on-action; another pan shot from the door to the table; and establishing shot from a high angle and the normal type off shots used for conversations. Also, a shot where Viraj is looking directly into the camera. Lastly, the sound produced for the clip was very clear and at an appropriate level. This is very important as the sound can ‘make’ or ‘break’ the production.

EBI:
I think that id filming was better planned out, then we would have filmed more efficiently. This would have saved time in filming, light and more time for editing. The establishing shot could be deemed as breaking the 180 degree rule, but I think this may be a matter of opinion. When asked for feedback, Mr Baboo said that the match-on-action sequence may have been edited to be too quick. This allows me to improve my editing skills for my final production. Also, I think that such elements as lighting and mise-en-scene are very important. This made me realise to plan accordingly for the final production.

Overall, this was a very good experience for me and I had a lot of fun. I have also found that I have a lot more to learn, so I hope to carry on making productions to a high level.

Film Language Test 21/10/13 Feedback

WWW:
- There is the basis to a good response here, but you need more detail!
- You are picking out relevant aspects - sound especially.

EBI:
- For more notes required during screening.
- At least 3 paragraph for each question.
- Much more media language and deeper analysis required to reach the higher grades.

Learner Response:
- If more revision was done, then I think A much higher mark could have been achieved.
- I also definitely needed to make more notes during the screenings as this is what caused me to not be able to write a vast amount in the actual answer.

Evaluation of Sound Presentation

The Metal - Tenacious D

WWW:
- Great choice of music
- Use of colour very good (fits perfectly)
- Look and feel very good

EBI:
- Design of slides?
- Slightly more images?
- Gender - is heavy metal exclusively male?
- Tenacious D - a metal parody

What I would have done differently:
- I would have put male images as well as feminine images on the contrapuntal slide
- Definitely more images on each slide
- Even though Tenacious D is a parody rock band, I think that the feel of the music still comes through as aggressive and explosive rather than funny.

MIGRAIN analysis of iPhone 5c

Media Language:

From the clip, I can denote that a new mobile phone is being shown. The use of different shots gives a sense of fluidity, especially when the audience can see the working parts of the iPhone being made. The fluidity of the advert is also because of the editing. The detail seen in the advert is due to high-key lighting.

Institution:

This extended trailer is the main way in which the audience can receive information about the product. A lot of simulation is used in the advert, although it looks real. Through this manipulation, this gives the audience a specific way in which they will look at the product, making it seem better and for a higher class of people.

Genre:

It is an advertisement in which a closer look at the manufacturing process is looked at. Unlike normal adverts, it is extended to give even more detail about the new features. From this, I can connote that 'Apple' want the customer to feel that the company has nothing to hide and that they are trustworthy.

Representation:

Because of the image that comes with the iPhone, it seems that all of society feel obligated to buy the iPhone. The constant white background and high-key lighting gives a sense of cleanliness to the iPhone which boosts its image with audiences.

Audience:

The new iPhone 5c is mainly targeted at Asia and Eastern Asia. This is because it is know that Eastern Asia love lots of differing bright colours. However, being the worldwide company it is, 'Apple' can't target a specific area of the world because the product will too popular in all parts of the world.

Ideology and Values:

The messages and values that come with the iPhone 5c are that of flawlessness. Also, this advert makes the audience think that they have to have an iPhone because of the mindset that are put into. A positive value is that the advert is to inform about the product.

Narrative:

This advert has an open narrative. A lot of questions are answered but there are more questions which can only be answered if you buy the product. It is also very much a linear narrative.

Why I chose Media AS and What I Hope to Get Out of it.

So, I chose Media AS because it ties in very well with Music Technology (which is what I want to study at university). Its also a subject I think I can have a lot of fun in, but, still do really well.

I hope to gain quite a few things from the subject. Skills like being able to connote and denote at high levels. Also, being able to use the software(s) that go hand-in-hand with Media to a tremendous degree.
